About the City

Eudora, Kansas, a city of the second class, is located approximately 10 minutes east of Lawrence, Kansas, and 15 minutes west of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. While conveniently located near the many amenities of a university community and a metropolitan area, the City of Eudora retains a distinct small-town atmosphere and remains an attractive place to raise a family

The City of Eudora operates as a commission-manager form of government. The City Commission is made up of five Eudora residents who are elected at large by the residents of the City. The governing body is responsible for passing resolutions and ordinances, establishing policies for the City, and approving the City's annual budget.

Location

Eudora is located in eastern Douglas County, just 15 minutes away from Lawrence, Kansas, and 15 minutes from the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. With a population of 6,400, Eudora maintains a distinct small-town atmosphere yet is within short driving distance of the amenities of a university community and metropolitan area.

Municipal Utilities and Services

The City owns and operates its own water, sewer, and electric (distribution only) utility systems. Atmos Energy supplies natural gas, and AT&T provides telephone service to City residents. The City also operates both the police and fire departments. The police department employs 10 full-time equivalents. The fire department consists of a full-time fire chief and 30 paid-per-call volunteers.

Education

Unified School District No. 491 (Eudora) serves City residents, with a 2011/12 enrollment of 1,567 students. There are four educational facilities in the district, which include an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and the Eudora-De Soto Technical Education Center. Post-secondary education located within commuting distance of the City includes Johnson County Community College, the University of Kansas, Baker University, Haskell Indian Nations University, and Mid-American Nazarene University.

Community & Facilities

Eudora is a young and growing community, with 31% of our residents under the age of 18. The Eudora school system has been recognized as a top 10 school district in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, and the City maintains numerous parks and recreational facilities. In 2007, the Eudora Community Center was constructed. The facility includes a fitness room, gymnasium, two community meeting rooms, a kitchen, a walking track, an outdoor pool, and modern locker rooms.

Recreation and Cultural Facilities

Eudora, through its Parks and Recreation Department, offers its residents seven parks and park shelters, a community center gymnasium, a community room, an aquatic center, ball fields, and concessions stands, youth summer camp opportunities, a wellness center, and a variety of sports and programs. Other cultural, recreational, and entertainment activities are accessible to City residents in the nearby Kansas City Metropolitan Area and the City of Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas.

Transportation

The City has access to US Highway 59, Interstate Highways 70 and 35, and Kansas Highway 10. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad provides rail service, and 15 motor freight lines serve the City. Regularly scheduled air service is available at the Kansas City International Airport, located approximately 45 minutes from the City. City residents also have access to the Lawrence Municipal Airport, located within ten miles of the City, which provides a runway capable of handling private and corporate aircraft.

Health Care Facilities

Major medical service is available at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH), a 173-bed facility located approximately 10 miles from the City. Eudora Family Care, a local branch of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, is located in the LMH Eudora Medical Park. Eudora Family Care has 11 exam rooms and two primary care physicians who provide family medical care, lab tests, preventive health screens, and more. Also located in the City is the Medicalodges Eudora, a 74-bed nursing home facility.

Financial Institutions located within the City include Kaw Valley State Bank, Central Bank of the Midwest, and Mutual Savings Association FSA.
